A growing number of Britons will be all too aware if they suddenly receive bank charges out of the blue, as more people are compulsively checking the balance of their accounts. According to a study conducted by Halifax, such is the need for belt tightening across the UK, 38 per cent of consumers know what their bank balance is to the nearest £5. In the past, some customers may not have noticed when their bank had taken money from their account for whatever reason, but the statistics showed that this may no longer be the case. The survey also indicated that one in ten people admitted that money starts to get tight within one week of receiving their monthly salary. Halifax chiefs believe the current economic climate has forced people to garner more control over their bank accounts. Last week the Bank of England revealed that Britons were keen to reduce their debts in December 2011, with £377 million being paid off in total during the month.
