Credit card cash withdrawals 'subject to high credit card charges'

Customers will have to pay substantial credit card charges if they use their plastic to withdraw cash at an ATM, one expert has warned.

Louise Holmes of Moneyfacts explained using a credit rather than debit card to take out cash is "never advisable", as high interest rates "will be charged almost immediately", This is Money reports.

She explained interest rates applicable to cash withdrawals are "typically higher than those for purchases" and urged people to use a debit card in such instances.

Ms Holmes was commenting after Play raised feeds for its credit card, meaning holders who withdraw £50 in cash will be charged around £6 in interest and feeds if they take a month to pay off the money.

These charges may not incurred by many customers, as latest figures from the British Bankers' Association show that while £7 billion was spend on credit cards last month, more was paid back by customers as they looked to clear outstanding balances.
