Parents struggling to pay off bank charges and loan claims could be ensuring their children have a good meal every morning by taking advantage of school breakfast clubs. Research from Kelloggs has shown that 79 per cent of teachers say some youngsters are hungry when they turn up to school, with a lack of money cited in 57 per cent of cases as the reason for this. Food charity FareShare revealed a 57 per cent increase in the number of schools that are reliant on teachers to feed famished children with hand-outs, with 31 per cent of these professionals bringing food in for their pupils. Furthermore, one-twelfth of these individuals spend between £16 and £25 every month on cereal bars or fruit. "Breakfast clubs can provide a lifeline for these families," ContinYou chief executive Karin Woodley said. However, 40 per cent of these clubs have shut down in the last year. "We're extremely concerned to hear that many are being forced to close," Ms Woodley added.
