The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has put aside another £400 million to account for the cost of claims from customers who were mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI). This brings the total amount the bank has put aside to £1.7 million and comes just as it announced a pre-tax loss of £1.26 billion for the quarter to September 20th. So far this year RBS has posted losses of £3.4 billion. Although in the same quarter last year the bank made profits of £1.2 billion. Of the £1.7 billion put aside, RBS has paid out £1 billion in compensation. The bank, which is 80 per cent owned by the government, conceded that the financial cost of the fallout of the PPI scandal could grow even further. In addition to the PPI compensation, RBS has had to put to one side £50 million to compensate those customers impacted by a recent computer error that saw individuals locked out of their accounts.
