PPI claim implications after Abbey abolishes fees?

Abbey has launched a new current account with no fees attached, which could appeal to individuals who have had to make a PPI claim.

With more examples surfacing of customers being mistreated by banks, Abbey has said its new account will have no authorised charges, no unauthorised charges, no charges for unpaid items and no charges for paid items.

In addition, customers who open the account will not be charged for using ATMs abroad, while there will also be no foreign exchange fees.

The Santander Zero Current Account will be launched in the new year and will be available to anyone who already holds or opens a mortgage with the bank.

Chief executive of Santander UK Antonio Horta-Osorio explained that the bank's new approach is one "based on simplicity".

"We can only deliver on our promises because we are the UK's most efficient bank and have the backing of one of the world's best retail banks," he commented.

"We can share the benefits of efficiency and scale with our customers through market-leading products and improved service."

Elsewhere, it is expected that judges from the supreme court will pass judgement on unfair bank charges next week.
