Bank refunds may still be possible despite ruling

Those who have made bank claims are still clinging on to hope despite today's judgment by the Supreme Court in favour of banks.

Although the court said that bank reclaims on overdraft charges could not be investigated by the government's Office of Fair Trading (OFT), it has left the door open for the organisation to investigate other bank claims or use different regulations.

In his statement this morning, president of the Supreme Court Lord Phillips said: "This will not close the door on the OFT's investigations and may well not resolve the myriad cases that are currently stayed [put on hold] in which customers have challenged the relevant charges."

The Supreme Court was officially opened last month and replaces the law lords as the highest court of the land.
