Payment Protection Reclaim: Barclays welcomes court decision

Barclays has welcomed the Supreme Court ruling in favour of banks and against those claiming back what they believed to be unfair charges.

A spokesperson for the bank said: "We welcome the Supreme Court's ruling that our overdraft charges are legal, confirming that unarranged overdraft charges are an important part of the price for the package of current account services provided to customers.

They said that the outcome of the case "provides clarity for customers and banks alike", bringing resolution to both groups, acknowledging that this was the outcome which Barclays wanted from the proceedings.

The spokesperson went on to say that the bank plans to work closely with the Financial Services Authority and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in the future and will provide regular updates for customers via its website.

It emerged today that in spite of the court's ruling, the OFT may still be able to legally support consumers in battles over other types of bank charges.
