Tesco Bank loses PPI complainant's data

Tesco Bank has lost the personal details of customers who were complaining about being mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI), according to reports.

Financial website thisismoney.co.uk has found that the firm sent names, addresses and confidential account details unprotected via the standard postal service.

The data was lost by a Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) employee who was working as a contractor for Tesco Bank.

Personal data on the 39 PPI complainants should have been sent by recorded delivery or via a courier.

Tesco Bank admitted that there is no record of the data being sent in a secure manner and therefore data security practices were breached.

A spokesman said: "We have taken the precaution to inform our customers and take steps to safeguard their accounts.

"An action plan has been devised and implemented to ensure that the service provider involved complies with our stringent requirements for handling and transferring customer data."

RBS previously had a 50 per cent stake in Tesco financial operations and used to provide credit card services to the bank.
