PPI Barclaycard
In recent years there has been a huge rise in the number of people making complaints regarding credit card payment protection cover. The problems surrounding payment protection, often known as PPI, were first raised in 2006 by The Financial Services Authority and The Office of Fair Trading following investigations into the sale of the cover. They found significant failings across the PPI industry and this has led to a significant increase in the number of payment protection insurance claims across the financial world.
If you have a PPI Barclaycard policy you may be unsure whether this policy was mis-sold and whether you may be entitled to make a claim. Some of the common issues surrounding credit card PPI policies are outlined below.
Was the price of your credit card PPI clearly explained?
Credit card PPI can be expensive. The cost of the insurance is usually applied on a monthly basis and depends on the card’s outstanding balance. The charge is often around 79p per £100 outstanding on the balance. This means if you owe nothing on your credit card you will not be charged for PPI. If; however, you owe £10,000 on your card you could be charged in the region of £79.00 per month. If the costs were not clearly explained to you your policy may be considered to be mis-sold and you may be entitled to make a claim.
Were the exemptions and conditions of the policy clearly explained?
Most PPI policies have a high number of exemptions attached. These are things not covered by the insurance. A 2008 Competition Commission survey found that just 11% of customers who tried to use their credit card PPI policy received a payout. This exceptionally low figure is likely to be, at least in part, connected to the high number of exemptions attached to these kinds of policies. If you do not feel the terms and conditions of your policy were clearly explained to you this may be considered mis-selling and you could be entitled to make a claim.
