If you have been mis-sold payment protection cover you may have considered making a complaint, but felt unsure about where to begin. The process of making a claim for mis sold PPI can feel daunting, but if you were mis-sold a policy you have the right to make a complaint and could be entitled to compensation totalling thousands of pounds. Mis-selling can be divided roughly into two groups. Either you were sold a policy that was unsuitable for you or you were given incomplete, incorrect or misleading information.
Were sold a policy that was unsuitable for you?
In some cases a policy may be deemed mis-sold if it was of limited use to the customer concerned. Examples here include customers who were entitled to full sick pay from their employer who would have little use for the cover or someone with existing PPI cover in place elsewhere. In more extreme cases policies were sold to customers who were ineligible to use the cover. Examples here could include customers with severe health problems or those aged over the age of sixty-five who would not normally be eligible for the insurance. As part of the sales process the lender should have evaluated your suitability for the cover. If you do not feel your situation was correctly assessed this may be considered mis-selling.
Were you given incomplete, incorrect or misleading information?
As part of the sales process you should have been given full and frank information regarding your PPI policy. If you were given information that was incomplete, E.g. the full costs were not explained to you, or information that was incorrect, E.g. that you had to have the cover, you could be entitled to make a claim. You may also be eligible to make a PPI claim if you were given misleading information, E.g. that taking out the cover would improve your chances of being given the loan, or if you were placed under undue pressure by the salesperson.
