PPI Resolution

If you have already started your payment protection claim or are contemplating starting a claim, you are probably keen to find out how long PPI resolution will take and how long you will have to wait to receive your payment protection refunds. The amount of time it takes for a claim to be resolved will vary according to the complexity of the case. Where mis-selling is easily established you may receive your refund in just eight weeks. In more complex cases it can take several months for a claim to be resolved.

Where It All Began

Since 2005 there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people making payment protection insurance claims. This rise was sparked by an investigation by the Financial Services Authority that revealed many failings in the way the cover was being sold across the lending world. As a result of these investigations, several lenders being fined. The failings identified included a failure to make customers fully aware of the terms of the policy and a failure to protect customers from being mis-sold an unsuitable policy.

Reaching an Acceptable PPI Resolution

As a result of the problems indentified with the mis-selling of PPI unhappy customers began to submit complaints. Many people were unhappy with the treatment they had received and felt they should be compensated. The appropriate way to compensate customers and to reach an acceptable PPI resolution became a major issue for lenders and customers. The accepted method of compensation, where mis-selling was proven, became to give customers a full refund of all premiums paid along with some lenders also awarding 8% interest as standard.

What Happens When a Satisfactory PPI Resolution Can't Be Reached?

There will be times when a PPI resolution cannot be reached with the lender and this is where it is time to bring the claim before the Financial Ombudsman Service. The FOS hears all appeals in PPI claims that haven't reached an acceptable PPI resolution and they are the ones who have the final say. The FOS is an impartial, independent body so your claim is guaranteed to viewed fairly and if the FOS finds in your favour your lender will have to comply and issue you with the appropriate refund.
