PPI Yorkshire Bank
If you have a Yorkshire Bank loan, mortgage or credit card then it is likely you were also offered some form of payment protection or loan insurance. Payment protection cover has become increasingly controversial in recent years and has been the subject of thousands of customer complaints. The main issue with payment protection is not the cover itself, but the way in which it has sometimes been sold.
Investigations by The Office of Fair Trading and The Financial Ombudsman Service in 2006 found grave errors in the way some lenders approached the sale of the insurance cover. A lack of training and internal processes meant that staff frequently gave incorrect or misleading information and that cover was, in some cases, was sold to customers who were, quite simply, ineligible to use it.

In 2006, The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) also investigated charges applied for late payments and over the limit fees on credit cards. Their investigations revealed that, in many cases, these charges could be disproportionately high. Lenders tried to justify charges stating they were necessary to cover the costs incurred when a customer made a late payment or exceeded a limit, but the OFT dismissed this. Instead the OFT decided the maximum fair fees applied for such charges should be £12. In response to the OFT’s report, the majority of lenders lowered their fees to the £12 mark.
Despite the changes, many customers who paid high charges for late payments and over the limit fees over the years felt angry that they had been forced to pay fees that had now been deemed unfair. As a result there was a sharp increase in the amount of unhappy customers claiming back bank charges.
