Welcome mis sold PPI
If you have a payment protection policy taken out through Welcome Finance you may be unsure how to approach making a claim since it was announced the business is in default. Default is a term applied when a Financial Service Authority (FSA) regulated business either ceases trading or is no longer financially able to settle claims made against it. In Welcome’s case the announcement was not wholly unexpected after it announced in 2009 that its debts exceeded its assessments by £1.1 billion. Because Welcome is authorised by the FSA its claims will now be investigated by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) who will pay compensation to customers where necessary.
One of the major issues that have affected Welcome’s financial position has been the sharp rise in the number of customers making complaints regarding mis sold payment protection. In fact, the volume of Welcome mis sold PPI claims led the lender to be named by the Financial Ombudsman Service as the fourth most complained about insurer of 2010.
Welcome is not alone with regards to complaints concerning payment protection cover. Since the FSA first exposed problems with the sale of the insurance in 2006 there have been in excess of 1.5 million complaints. The issue has affected all levels of the lending world from independent financial advisors through to multi-national retail banks. The grounds for mis-selling can also be quite broad from policies being added without the knowledge of the customer to customers being pressured into taking out the cover.
If you believe you have a Welcome mis sold PPI policy, you have the right to make a complaint. The fact claims will now be investigated by the FSCS may mean the process will take a little longer, but if successful you should be entitled to receive a full refund of premiums paid plus 8% interest.
