Halifax PPI Complaints
For many years Halifax has offered payment protection cover alongside its residential mortgages. Payment protection is designed to cover a borrower if they are unable to keep up debt repayments as a result of involuntary unemployment, accident or sickness. This kind of cover can be particularly attractive to anyone taking out a mortgage as failure to keep up repayments could result in the loss of their home.
In the last five years several major issues surrounding mortgage payment protection insurance have been exposed and now more people than ever are making Halifax PPI complaints. The issues surrounding this type of insurance include: concerns regarding its high cost, the low rate of payouts and the issue of mis-selling.
Mis-selling has been exposed as a massive problem which has affected all levels of the lending industry. It is not only sold alongside mortgages, but also loans, credit cards, store cards and hire purchase agreements and issues have been reported with sales alongside all these products.
Mis-selling is quite a broad term and can include a range of issues. Some specific examples are outlined below.
- The customer was incorrectly told they had to have the policy.
- The customer was incorrectly told taking out the policy would guarantee or improve their chance of being given a loan.
- The customer was sold their policy even though they were unsuitable for the cover e.g. they were retired or in full time education.
- The customer was sold a single-premium policy that would not cover the whole length of their loan, but was not warned they would be left without cover.
- The customer was sold the policy without the full costs being made clear.
- The customer was sold the policy without the terms and conditions being fully explained.
