Bank Reclaim: Three quarters of savings accounts are diminishing
Only one quarter of savings accounts pay enough interest to cover the effect of inflation, new research by MoneySupermarket.com has found.
This means that most savers' deposits are actually diminishing.
Consumers are losing out because of a combination of low interest rates, rising inflation, bank charges and taxes.
In the current economic climate, most consumers need to find accounts with interest rates of 1.875 per cent or more to see income generated from their savings, while this figure rises to 2.5 per cent for those who pay higher-rate tax.
Thousands of bank reclaim cases are set to be re-examined by the Financial Services Authority, including instances of PPI misselling.
