Credit Card PPI: Bankers threaten to quit to save £1.5bn bonuses

The board of directors of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have said they may resign in response to government attempts to curb the size and terms of the bonuses they can pay.

Having paid out £1 billion last year, the firm, which is majority-owned by the UK taxpayer, is planning to make more than £1.5 billion in bonus payouts this year.

Chancellor Alistair Darling has seized control of this year's bonus pot at the company, which also owns Natwest, Coutts and Ulster Bank. He has also said that RBS will have to pay out bonuses in the form of shares rather than cash this year.

RBS said in a statement yesterday defending its bonus payments: "Our agreed business plan requires us to operate commercially in competitive markets and this plan underpins the prospects of recovering value for taxpayers and other shareholders alike."

The firm had to be rescued by the British government last year.

Recently bank claims stretching back over years have been thrown out following a ruling by the Supreme Court.
