Criminals ran PPI scam

An organised gang of criminals have been running a fraudulent payment protection insurance scheme which has stolen millions of pounds from people in Britain, the Times reports.

Jobseekers are being fooled by fake job advertisements and are promised employment as payment protection agents.

They are then told to use their personal bank accounts to make money transfers which are claimed to be quicker and cheaper, but in reality stolen money from elsewhere was passed through the personal accounts.

The groups behind the scam have been tracked by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), which estimates that they launder as much as £10 million a week using the method.

Bogus jobs are offered on fake recruitment websites, and a SOCA spokesperson said: "In the last four years their recruitment sites have become very sophisticated and they are even using legitimate sites to advertise - and very intelligent people who have worked in large companies are being duped."

SOCA was set up in 2006 to deal with serious crime.
