Big Christmas spenders could face January bank charges
Consumers who spend big this Christmas having been paid early in December could struggle to tide themselves over until their first payday of the New Year, it has been warned.
With many employers paying staff earlier than normal in the run-up to Christmas, Moneynet.co.uk has warned those who do not carefully moderate their spending that they could easily fall into their overdrafts.
For those who have not agreed terms with their current account provider beforehand, the bank charges associated with doing so could be astronomical, the personal finance website warned.
Andrew Hagger, a representative of the company, said: "Failure to check the state of your current account and adopting a worry-about-it-later attitude could see you run out of cash and faced with some hefty bank charges in the New Year."
He urged consumers to regularly check their current accounts through the Christmas period, something there can be no excuse not to do in the age of 24-hour online banking.
Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter, MP for Cheadle, has warned that the decision by the Payment Council to phase out the use of cheques could leave many vulnerable people at a disadvantage.
