Bank Claim: HSBC dishes £40m to a handful of staff

HSBC has today added fuel to the fire surrounding the bankers' bonuses debacle after it dished out almost £40 million to a handful of staff.

The international banking giant paid out £38 million in bonus schemes yesterday to reward just five of its top investment bankers for their efforts in 2009.

Of the five, head of investment banking Stuart Gulliver scooped the highest payout taking away a cool £9 million.

The figure more than twice exceeded that given to the bank's chief executive Michael Geoghegan who, as the fifth highest earner, said he would give his £4 million bonus to charity.

However, while Mr Geoghegan may have forfeited his reward payout, critics have claimed that he is in line for a huge increase in salary this year anyway.

HSBC chairman Stephen Green has reportedly defended a potential salary hike for the bank's chief executive claiming that an increase is well deserved.

"Mike is underpaid," he remarked. "He's not one of 150 highest-paid chief executives in the world ... and his salary is fourth out of the six big UK banks."
