New rules for credit card loans are to be announced today in a bid to crack down on excessive charges and irresponsible lending. In partnership with credit card companies and store card providers, the government is set to unveil a five point plan detailing the changes, which will take effect by the end of the year.Under the proposals, consumers will be able to pay off their most expensive debt first and will also have the option to dispute a hike in interest rates and charges, among other benefits.Speaking ahead of the announcement, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "These new rights will put an end to the irresponsible lending practices that people have been most concerned about, and help cut the cost of borrowing."The announcement will be good news for consumers who have recently been faced with the highest credit card interest rates in more than 12 years, according to Moneyfacts who found that the average rate is now 18.8 per cent.Belmont Thornton can help you make a PPI claim Payment Protection Insurance Claim, or a credit card charges claim.
