Bank Claim: War widow launches battle over bankers' pay
The widow of a bomb disposal expert killed in Afghanistan has stated that war heroes should be paid like bankers.
Christina Schmid, whose 30-year-old husband Olaf 'Oz' Schmid was on a basic salary of £35,000, despite defusing over 70 IEDs during his time in Afghanistan, hit out at the low-rate salary given to those on the front line.
She compared the Army salary to that of Barclays president Bob Diamond, who last year picked up a basic earning of £22 million, with a rumoured total package in excess of £60 million.
"If Bob Diamond's got a talent for looking after people's money, fine. Pay him for that," said Mrs Schmid
"But, equally, shouldn't people like Oz and those guys be getting the big dollar? Because Oz really was talented, indispensable, irreplaceable and had huge responsibilities."
Her comments came while she collected the George Cross medal for bravery in London on behalf of her husband, who leaves behind a six-year-old son Laird.
