PPI Claim: Weather 'will make elderly vulnerable'

Payment protection claims or credit card refunds could provide the financial confidence people need in order to keep the heating on this winter.

Dr Ros Altmann, director-general of Saga, said that with the government cutting the Winter Fuel Payment many households will feel the effects of the cold temperatures more than ever in the coming months.

"We are particularly concerned about the statistics showing that the UK has a higher winter death rate among older people than most other European countries," she said.

Dr Altmann believes this winter could be particularly tough due to fuel prices that have increased during the course of the year.

Saga is backing a scheme which could allow people who feel they do not need the reduced Winter Fuel Payment to pass on their entitlement to others.

According to the Department of Health, the cold weather is increasing the incidences of strokes, heart attacks and respiratory problems.
