PPI Claim: Families 'cannot afford energy price hikes'

Payment protection insurance refunds could provide families in the UK with the financial windfall they need to cope with increasing energy prices.

According to uSwitch.com, gas and electricity suppliers have increased their prices by 21 per cent this year – a figure which equates to the average household having to find an extra £224.

The site states that the average energy bill for British families is now £1,293 a year. Many people believe that £1,500 is the most they can afford.

More than three quarters (77 per cent) of households said that once their bills breach this limit they will begin to ration the amount of energy they use in their homes, while 36 per cent are planning to turn the heating off completely.

The general secretary of the Trades Union Congress Brendan Barber recently stated that high inflation caused by the energy rises could ruin Christmas for many families in the UK.
