A large number of Britons are in urgent need of a payout from a payment protection insurance (PPI) claim, as many are struggling to meet rent and mortgage payments. According to a new study conducted by Shelter, nearly one million UK citizens have taken out a payday loan in order to ensure their accommodation costs were covered in the past 12 months. The organisation also revealed that as many as seven million people are reliant on some other form of help such as a credit card. Shelter's chief executive Campbell Robb labelled the findings as "shocking" and insisted that using payday loans - where workers borrow money before their monthly wage goes into their bank - to cover mortgage costs is "totally unsustainable". "It can quickly lead to debts snowballing out of control and can lead to eviction or repossession and ultimately homelessness," he commented. Bernard Clarke, communications manager at the Council of Mortgage Lenders, has also urged struggling homeowners to seek professional advice if they cannot cover their monthly repayments.
