Prime minister David Cameron has urged the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) to "show restraint" when issuing bonuses to senior employees. Mr Cameron has reversed the UK's policy of non-intervention from the government over bonus payments, following an outcry over the huge package that was being offered to RBS leader Stephen Hester. Downing Street had insisted at the start of the week (January 30th) that it would not force the company to rein in its perks this year, but it has now backtracked. "They have got to have proper regard in terms of restraint when they have had so much money from the taxpayer and they have made so many mistakes in the past," Mr Cameron remarked. His comments came after business secretary Vince Cable urged leaders of other banks to follow the lead of Mr Hester and turn down excessive bonus payments. Labour leader Ed Miliband criticised Mr Cameron's original stance on the issue, labelling him "feeble" and "out of touch".
