A growing number of UK homeowners are being forced to take in lodgers in order to cover their monthly credit card charges and other debts, it has been revealed.New research conducted by Spareroom.co.uk has indicated that January was a record month for people renting out rooms in their homes. Indeed, the website saw 6,000 property owners advertise their spare rooms to potential lodgers during the month, which was an 83 per cent increase on figures for December 2011. It also represented a 15 per cent rise on the previous record month - which was August 2011. This is hardly surprising when statistics recently released by the Bank of England are taken into account, as it declared that record numbers paid off their credit card debts in December 2011, repaying a total of £377 million. Director of Spareroom.co.uk Matt Hutchinson said the economic downturn has forced Britons to take drastic measures. "Millions of people across the UK will be struggling to pay off loans and credit card debts - and that's on top of paying ever-increasing living expenses," he remarked.
