American Express offering cashback credit card charges

American Express has launched a new product aimed at people who are trying to minimise their credit card charges.

The Platinum Cashback Credit Card provides five per cent cashback on expenditure up to £2,500 during the first three months, providing people with the potential of receiving an extra £25 at this rate.

It also delivers an ongoing 1.25 per cent flat rate, with this applying immediately thereafter.

Head of credit cards at American Express Nick Stefanovitz pointed out that a significant number of people are using debit cards and other tools for everyday spending.

He explained the new product could offer these individuals "a financial return for the way they pay".

Personal finance expert at uSwith.com Michael Ossei said: "Competition in the cashback credit card market is hotting up in the run up to the Christmas spend-athon."

He noted that people who make a credit card claim for one of these tools could get a return on their spending.
