PPI Halifax
If you have taken out a loan or mortgage in the last 20 years it is very likely your bank, building society or broker would also have offered you some kind of payment protection insurance. Payment protection cover was designed to cover a borrower’s debt repayments in the event they were unable to work due to accident, sickness or involuntary unemployment. Many people, therefore, the cover invaluable particularly where loss of employment could, ultimately, lead to the loss of their home.
Issues with payment protection insurance, such as PPI Halifax, started to emerge in 2006 when investigations by The Office of Fair Trading and The Financial Services Authority revealed significant failings in the way that some lenders were selling the cover. It was found that many lenders had failed to put in place adequate processes to protect customers being mis-sold an unsuitable policy and mis-selling had become a widespread issue throughout the financial world.
The ways in which policies had been mis-sold varied considerably, but following the investigations there was a significant rise in the number of unhappy customers applying for PPI refunds and some patterns began to emerge.
In many cases customers complained they had not been made fully aware of the costs or conditions attached to their policies, while others were incorrectly told the policies were compulsory or taking out the cover would improve their chance of being approved for the loan. It some cases policies were even added without the customer’s consent or were sold to customers whose circumstances meant they would be unable to use them.
